Clean & Clear
We say no to clean beauty chaos and yes to transparency. Our formulas are plant-powered, environmental friendly, and free from 1500+ toxic ingredients. As proof of our commitment to transparency, all of our ingredients fit into four categories: Nature-based ingredients grown or harvested without the use of conventional or synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Each organic ingredient utilized in our formulas has been certified by an accredited organic certifying organization. All products have at least 70% or more organic content (excluding water and salt). Nature-based ingredients only used when availability of the organic form is scarce due to unpredictable and extreme weather patterns that effect crop conditions, such as droughts or floods. Nature-based ingredients that are minimally processed to ensure high performance in each formula. A limited list of preservatives and other ingredients that we allow in our products to ensure product safety and performance. These ingredients help our products last longer and are held to the highest safety standards.

Our Partnership with Green Spark & Plastic Bank
In partnership with Greenspark & Plastic Bank, we are committed to stopping plastic from entering our oceans and increasing our efforts to contribute to environmental protection and social responsibility. For every item purchased on our website, we will rescue 2x ocean-bound plastic bottles. John Masters is now Plastic Neutral! About Plastic Bank: Plastic Bank® builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities while simultaneously creating positive economic opportunities for those who helped collect it. Currently, more than half of plastic produced is designed to be single-use, and less than 9% is recycled. Today, over 5 trillion pieces of plastic litter the ocean. The most famous accumulation of discarded plastic is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area of floating plastic pollution approximately three times the size of France. To fight plastic pollution, society must move away from the linear model of “Take, Make, Dispose”, and instead embrace a circular model that recycles and reuses the same resources indefinitely. Plastic Bank promotes the circular economy by monetising plastic waste. Their collectors receive a premium for the materials they collect which helps them provide basic family necessities. The collected material is reborn as Social Plastic® which can be easily reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. Not only does Plastic Bank prevent ocean-bound plastics from reaching our waterways, but they also reduce the number of new plastics being created by encouraging companies to switch to recycled sources. This is just the start of our sustainability journey. We are always looking for more ways to improve our practices in every way we can. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for our brand we would love to hear your feedback! Please reach out to online@johnmasters.com. Source

What Does Clean Beauty Mean?
I’m sure by now you've heard of the Clean Beauty Movement. But how clean is clean beauty? The term ‘clean beauty’ is entirely unregulated and leaves a lot of room for claims that products are better or cleaner than they may be. Within the United States, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) bans just 11 ingredients within cosmetics, while the UK bans over 1,300. Because there truly is no clear definition for clean beauty - or terms like ‘naturally derived’, ‘cruelty-free’, and ‘non-toxic’- brands can use this verbiage as marketing ploys to make false claims and create their own definitions of clean beauty. At John Masters Organics, we strive for transparency with our ingredients and our products. Everything we do stems from Perfectly Natural Beauty, and we leave the "clean" standard up to the experts. We choose to certify our products with third party certifications, like COSMOS Organic, so you can feel good about what you're putting on your body. What is COSMOS - Certified Organic? "COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard" - A certification, recognized worldwide, that denotes sustainable practices and reliably organic ingredient composures of beauty products. What does COSMOS- Certified Organic mean? A beauty care product is COSMOS-Certified Organic only if: 95% minimum of the plants it contains are organic At least 20% of organic ingredients are present in the total formula (10% for rinse-off products) Production and Packaging meet all other COSMOS Standards What are the COSMOS Standards? Defined standards for water, mineral, and ingredients of mineral origin. Defined processes for calculating the organic content of ingredients. Ensures cleanliness, hygiene, and traceability of ingredients, and that product packaging respects the environment. Details the requirements for care of the environment throughout the manufacturing process and recycling waste. Comprehensive requirements for clear COSMOS labeling on products All products, raw materials and manufacturing is certified by a component. Genetically Modified Materials (GMO's) are forbidden. Nanomaterials (labeled as fullerenes, micronized zinc oxide, nano zinc oxide, micronized titanium dioxide, etc.) are forbidden. Products are forbidden from being tested on animals by the manufacturer or third party. Promoting the usage of responsibly sourced organic materials. Strict annual inspections for COSMOS Certification renewals. Organic and natural percentages of ingredients are required on all cosmetic packaging, in addition to a strictly prohibited ingredient list. How to Make Lasting Habits
As creatures of habit, we tend to follow the same patterns and routines throughout our lives. We become acclimated to the potentially unhealthy or harmful habits we’ve formed previously, and it may become difficult to change your routine and build new, healthier habits that last a lifetime. Creating long-lasting habits takes time, dedication, commitment, and good knowledge of yourself and your limits. “Successful people are simply those with successful habits.” – Brian Tracy Tip 1: Setting Attainable Goals One way to start your journey of incorporating long-lasting wellness routines into your lifestyle is by setting attainable goals to help you with healthier habits. Setting goals can be beneficial in multiple ways: Providing a direction and sense of focus to a desired end, providing inspiration to complete a specific task for a desired reward, and even providing yourself with the accountability of whether you were able to achieve said goals. When setting goals, it’s important that you create well-defined, attainable goals, rather than setting unrealistic expectations of yourself. Setting far-stretched goals can diminish your enthusiasm, as well as lower your self-esteem and motivation by failing to meet the personal expectations you’ve set of yourself. Setting unrealistic goals can also increase your stress and anxiety, which is counterproductive to reaching your target. If you have a larger goal you’d like to reach, it may be beneficial to break that goal into smaller, more achievable targets. This can help you to stay more focused and dedicated to the task at hand, as well as make it easier to measure your progress toward your goals. Tip 2: Consistency is Key You may have heard the phrase “Consistency is Key” in many parts of your life. Well, in fact, consistency IS the key to building long-lasting habits. Studies show that it takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form a new habit, and on average, 66 days for that behavior to become automatic. (https://www.healthline.com/health/how-long-does-it-take-to-form-a-habit ) With this being said, a new habit cannot be formed without commitment and dedication to the task. The more consistent you become, the easier the habit will be to stick, and the harder it will become to break. Consistency not only helps to form long-lasting habits, but it also helps you to become disciplined, committed, and more patient with yourself. Tip 3: Progress over Perfection Choosing to embrace your progress over your perfection is one way to swap your mindset to a “progress mentality” to encourage building healthier long-lasting habits. When creating and building habits, it’s important to keep track of progress toward solidifying that habit or reaching a desired goal. The more you are monitoring your progress made toward a goal, the more you are aware of your task and the likelier you are to succeed at achieving that goal. Tip 4: Reward Yourself We all need incentives… You are your biggest source of inspiration & motivation... Even the smallest goals deserve rewards when attained. When you give yourself a reward, your brain produces a feel-good hormone, dopamine, which makes us feel happy and reinforces behaviors as worthwhile. When you reinforce healthy behaviors – such as hitting milestones in your workouts or staying dedicated to a task for a period of time - as worthwhile, you’re training your body to naturally want to do more of those things you’re being rewarded for. This will make it easier for you to continue on your healthy-habit making ways, and enjoy the process with rewards while you’re doing so.
Let's review some top sellers
Looking for something new to try but unsure of where to start? We’re proud to have not one bestseller, but multiple bestselling products that garner cult-classic status in the organic and natural beauty realm. But why listen to just what we have to say about our products? It doesn’t get more honest than these candid reviews from our tried and true customers: Shampoo & Conditioner for Dry Hair Restore even the driest hair with this hydrating duo. Our silicone-free formula leaves hair naturally soft, radiant and manageable. “My hair is very curly so it can get pretty dry and brittle. Usually I have to use products with silicon or other less-desirable ingredients just to get my hair moisturized. So you can imagine my surprise when this all-natural organic product worked wonders - after just two washes! And the scent is botanical and light. Highly recommend!” - Christine A “I liked the original detangler, but am loving this new formula. It's the best lightweight conditioner, and I love that it's silicone-free (a definite improvement from the previous version). And the smell is nice and light, just a touch of floral and citrus. Paired with the Evening Primrose Shampoo, it's perfection for my hair!” - Carly C. Hair Mask for Normal Hair with Rose & Apricot One of our favorite and most beloved products, this five-star rated natural hair mask drenches dry strands in moisture and an indulgently rich cream formula. “I have never in my life gotten such instant results from a hair mask. It’s absolutely incredible.” - Jessica V. "I have long curly highlighted hair and this mask makes my hair look shiny, frizz-free and soft. It also does not weigh my hair down. What a miracle! It works because there are no silicones added. I love this mask so much I ordered four more just in case it is sold out! Thank you John Masters!” - Pamela L. Leave-in Conditioning Mist with Green Tea & Calendula A fan-favorite, this mist is an excellent pick for all hair types. Its lightweight formula gives hair a boost of nutrients that keep it soft, tangle-free and touchably soft all-day long. “Love this leave-in mist. It provides the perfect amount of hydration for my hair which is on the finer side. I do have a lot of hair though, so a detangler after the shower is must. Leaves my hair super soft after blow-drying also!” - Aly L. "This leave-in works great for a blowout on my tightly coiled hair because it is very light. I missed this product during the time John Masters Organics was not selling it. I'm glad it is back.” - Meadow

Ingredient Spotlight: Acacia Senegal Gum
We proudly boast the incredible style-holding power of our USDA-certified organic, aerosol-free natural Hair Spray because it’s one of the few of its kind on the market. How can a natural and organic hair spray mist possibly work just as well –– if not better –– than the colorful aerosol cans we see lined up on the shelves in stores and salons? The secret to the long-lasting, flake-free medium hold of our natural Hair Spray is called acacia senegal gum: an ingredient sustainably sourced from the bark of Acacia Senegal trees. The extracted white powder is a natural, soluble fiber obtained from the hardened sap, and is used as a binder in many beauty products from skincare to toothpaste. Its ability to provide texture and hold is what gives our hair spray the ability to keep styles in place all-day long while still remaining easy to brush and wash out at the end of the day.

Argan Oil - Our Liquid Gold
The amazing liquid multivitamin for hair, skin, and nails known as argan oil is aptly and commonly dubbed “liquid gold” in the beauty world. Sourced from the little brown nut of the –– you guessed it –– Argan tree that is native to Southwestern Morocco, it can take days to cold-press just a liter of the precious and nutrient-rich oil. Argan oil is packed with essential fatty acids, age-fighting antioxidants, must-have minerals, and deeply nourishing vitamins A and E. On the hair argan oil smooths split ends, tames frizz, and conditions strands from root to tip without weighing hair down. Pressing pure argan oil into bare skin protects complexions from sun damage, pollution, dryness and signs of aging without feeling greasy. Nails grow strong and cuticles are smoothed and soft when this lightweight oil is used on the hands. Try adding a few drops of argan oil to a bath and be amazed by how luxuriously nourished skin feels when you get out and wrap yourself in a towel. While argan oil’s rise in popularity has made it more accessible to consumers, it has also led to an array of imposters and diluted formulas on the market that are cheapened with filler ingredients such as silicones, artificial preservatives, dyes, fragrances, and other oils. Our single-ingredient 100% Argan Oil is not only pure and cold-pressed to maintain its nutrients and benefits, but it’s also USDA-certified organic so you can feel confident you’re only putting the best on your body. If you’re looking to simplify your beauty routine and free up space in your cabinet, argan oil can become your multi-tasking wonder elixir that nourishes from head to toe.
Happy Birthday to Us!
August 2022 marks the 28th anniversary of the beginning of John Masters Organics. While organic and clean beauty has been a trend on the rise the last few years, 28 years ago the idea of an organic, nature-based beauty line was radical and innovative. In 1994 John Masters was just a hair stylist with an idea. He had a passion for holistic living and natural, organic ingredients, which contradicted his work in the chemical-filled hair salons of New York. Toxic products and aerosols steep the air with formaldehyde, ammonia, fragrances, parabens and other harsh chemicals as clients came to receive their hair coloring, perms and treatments. With an idea to revolutionize the beauty world, John decided to remove himself from the salon space and began seeing his clients in his little Manhattan apartment –– soon after, he opened the world’s first clean air salon, John Masters Organic Salon in New York. While his revolutionary salon has since closed it doors, John continues his mission to spread the goodness of non-toxic beauty through John Masters Organics so that both professionals and non-professionals alike can enjoy safe, effective, natural, and organic beauty products.

The Secret Behind a Sulfate-Free Lather
At some point or another most people have been told to remove sulfates from their hair care regimen. Whether it’s to prolong the vibrancy of hair color or because sulfates are known to irritate sensitive skin, there are more than a few reasons why banishing sulfates from your haircare routine is a good idea. You may be surprised at just how many shampoos and other beauty products contain sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS. SLS is an emulsifier and foaming agent that helps soaps, shampoos and cleansers create a foamy lather that makes skin and hair feel clean. However, that super-clean feeling can actually mean that skin and hair have been stripped of their natural, protective oils, leaving complexions and strands dried out and damaged with prolonged use. SLS also notoriously strips hair color, leaving vibrant, rich hues dull and faded. When it comes to natural hair care, many companies have chosen to eliminate sulfates, leaving their shampoos without lather entirely. These formulas tend to be thinner and more difficult to evenly distribute throughout the hair and scalp, which makes it tough to get an all-over clean feeling. Unfortunately, this has left natural shampoos with a reputation of being inadequate, or simply not being as enjoyable to use as a shampoo formulated with sulfates. Luckily, sulfates aren’t the only way to get a great lather. In all of our shampoos at John Masters Organics, we use naturally derived surfactants sourced from coconuts that provide our formulas with a rich, creamy foam, making every wash feel luxurious. In our fan-favorite Shampoo For Normal Hair With Lavender & Rosemary we use coconut-derived Cocamidopropyl Betaine to create our signature lather so you can enjoy a lush, effective wash that evenly distributes throughout hair for healthy, naturally clean locks from root to tip.
