he anti-oxidant properties of vitamin C are widely known. Research has shown that vitamin C can help repair the skin and fight the effects of aging by stimulating collagen and fighting free radicals. However, vitamin C is a delicate, water-soluble compound, and not all forms of it are effective in topical application. Developing a stable, highly potent vitamin C product that penetrates the skin easily was our goal in producing our superior Vitamin C Anti-Aging Face Serum.
To begin with, ascorbic acid is unstable. It oxidizes quickly and loses its functionality. To solve this problem we use a very effective process which stabilizes the ascorbic acid. The derivative forms are an ester (ascorbyl palmitate) and salt (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate).
The method of stabilization is as follows: Fresh citrus protein pulp polypeptides from rosehips are complexed with 25% citric acid. The result is a natural protein complexed vitamin (Ascorbic Acid Polypeptide) that safely delivers the vitamin to the skin, penetrating while still potent. Complexation of vitamin and proteins increases stability.
To make sure our vitamin C is as fresh and potent as possible, it is produced fresh for us every time we need to make a batch of our serum. The method of manufacture follows: Fresh citrus pulp containing conjugated ascorbic acid is finely minced. The pulp is reacted with ascorbic acid at 37 to 40 deg.C. Reaction proceeds for 4-6 hours until no free ascorbic acid is detected. The reaction is stopped and the solids are removed by filtration. The remaining pulp is washed and the solution is concentrated and spray dried to a powder form.
In testing, compared to a cream with a like amount of ascorbic acid and a cream with a like amount of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, our complexed form showed superior stability, having its full potency after twelve weeks. In the same test, ascorbic acid had lost all potency and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate decreased potency by 20%.
Handling: When we are in production, the water is boiled to remove oxygen. Our vitamin C is added at the end of the manufacturing process when the product is cool. Our finished product is packaged in dark pharmaceutical-grade glass for protection. We further protect it from vitamin-damaging light by storing it in a box.
